This beautiful LP – quite rare, particularly in stereo – from Contemporary Records (S 8501, US pressing, black/silver label, deep groove, stereo) features Edward Steuermann's remarkable all-Busoni album, recorded at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles in 1959.

The exact track listing is as follows:

[A1] Busoni: Toccata Preludio - Fantasia - Ciaconna [08:55]

[A2] Busoni: Sonatina No. 1 [08:11]

[A3] Busoni: Sonatina No. 6 (Fantasia “Carmen”) [07:12]

Busoni: Six Elegies

[B1] 1. Nach der Wendung. Receuillement [03:21]

[B2] 2. All’ Italia! In modo napolitano [06:13]

[B3] 3. “Meine Seele bangt und hofft zu Dir”, Choralvorspiel [06:29]

[B4] 4. Turandot’s Frauengemach. Intermezzo [03:23]

[B5] 5. Die Nächtlichen. Walzer [02:35]

[B6] 6. Erscheinung. Notturno [04:39]

A pupil of both Busoni and Schoenberg, Steuermann brings a unique authority, as well as a brilliant and uncompromising clarity, to these intrepid masterpieces of the piano literature – one of the more important documents of 20th Century music.

The striking cover photo of Busoni was supplied by Mr. Nello Busoni, son of the composer, while the album design was executed by Guidi/Tri-Arts. The erudite and eloquent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket are by Steuermann himself, printed in English only.

This album was produced by Lester Koenig and engineered by Roy DuNann and Howard Holzer.
