DG (LP)

Jacket EX / LP EX

This handsome gatefold LP from Deutsche Grammophon (LPM 18335, German pressing, AH tulip label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features Kurt Sanderling and the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra’s magnificent account of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major Op. 36, recorded in the rich acoustics of the Grossersaal of the Vienna Konzerthaus on 30 June 1956.

This is a large-scale reading, but with a thrust and majesty that make it highly memorable. The fine mono anaolog sound is from DG’s top drawer – a wonderful disc.

There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by K.W., printed in German, English, French, and Spanish.
