Furtwangler: In Memoriam (Bach, Haydn, Bruckner, etc.) - DG KL 27/32 (5LP box set)
Box NM- / LPs NM-
This beautiful 5-LP box set – a fine collector's copy – from DG (KL 27/31, German pressing, tulip label, mono, booklet included) entitled “Wilhelm Furtwängler · In Memoriam” features a remarkable tribute to the legendary conductor. Furtwangler has been well-served on record, with many fine pressings on French, German, and UK labels, but his artistry has seldom been presented so handsomely as here.
One attraction of this set is that it gathers together truly some of his finest performances, if one can even narrow them down from such an illustrious legacy.
Included are the following recordings:
Bach: Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major BWV 1068
(rec. 22 October 1948, Titania-Palast, Berlin)
Haydn: Symphony No. 88 in G Major
(rec. 4-5 December 1951, Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin)
Mozart: Symphony No. 39 In E flat Major K.543
(rec. ‘live’ 1942, Berlin)
Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 6
Wolfgang Schneiderhan, violin
(rec. ‘live’ 18 May 1953, Titania-Palast, Berlin)
Schubert: Symphony No. 9 in C Major D.944 “The Great”
(rec. 27/28 November & 2/4 December 1951, Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin)
Schumann: Symphony No. 4 in D minor Op. 120
(rec. 14 May 1953, Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin)
Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 in D minor
(rec. “live” 7 October 1944, Beethovensaal, Berlin)
