Jacket GOOD / LP VG+ / US pressing
This fascinating LP from Remington (R-199-158, US pressing, black/gold “Musirama” label, mono) entitled “Alec Templeton plays improvisations on Offenbach and Strauss” features that truly remarkable pianist in his own delectable transcriptions, recorded in the early 1950s.
Included are the following works, all arranged for solo piano by Alec Templeton:
Tales of Hoffmann
La Vie Parisienne
La Belle Hélène
Orpheus in Hades
Johann Strauss Jr.
Tales from the Vienna Woods
Potpourri of Strauss Favorites
Alec Templeton is an artist whose recorded legacy is richly deserving of systematic re-issue and renewed appreciation on disc. This Wagner program, if not quite as opulent as some of its more famous rivals, is no less searching and individual – very much worth hearing.
Incidentally, the engaging cover art was designed by Slonevsky of Design House. There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only, by Alec Templeton.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is GOOD. There is a 5|” seamsplit to the upper spine and a second 2” seamsplit to the top edge. There is also very slight bumping/wear at corners. However, there are no other seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the jacket remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, still a decent copy.
The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD+. Although there is occasional light surface noise, in general the playback is quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
