Szeryng: Bach Violin Concertos BWV 1041-43 + Air - Spanish Philips 95 00 226 GT. 06
Jacket NM / LP NM
This superb LP from Spanish Philips (95 00 226 GT. 06, Spanish pressing, red/silver label, stereo) features Henryk Szeryng's radiant presentation of Bach's three greatest violin concerti: No. 1 in A minor BWV 1041, No. 2 in E Major BWV 1042, and the Concerto for Two Violins in D minor BWV 1043, in which the great Polish virtuoso is joined by the elegant playing of violinist Maurice Hasson.
In all three works, Szeryng is accompanied in brilliant fashion by Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Philips provides sterling sound, the sessions held from 23-25 June 1976. A lovely encore is provided by Szeryng, Marriner and the Academy in the form the famous 'Air' from the Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major BWV 1068.
Szeryng was among the great Bach players of the last Century, and this LP illustrates why.
Incidentally, there are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in Spanish only, by Geoffrey Crankshaw.
