Szeryng: 10 Great Violin Concerti - Philips Spain 5 OEL 050 (5LP box set)

$125.00 USD

Philips (LP)

Box EX / LPs NM

This outstanding and rare 5LP set from Philips (5 OEL 050, Spanish pressing, plum/silver labels, stereo, booklet included) features of Henryk Szeryng's great concerto recordings made for the Dutch label (some originally appearing on Mercury) taped during the years 1964-1970 (though most made in 1964/65) – recordings from the 'Golden Age of Stereo' when Szeryng was at the absolute height of his considerable powers. Moreover, he is afforded Philips' finest analogue sound throughout.

While some of these recordings are quite familiar and circulated widely – the Mendelssohn and Mozart Concerti, for instance – others have been unjustly overshadowed by rival performances and have seemed to suffered a Cinderella's fate – e.g., the superb Sibelius and Prokofiev discs.

This handsome set offers outstanding pressings of these remarkable recordings, all of them of a quality that silences criticism, reaffirming Szeryng's statures as one of the great violinists of the last Century – a dazzling, questing virtuoso with a beautifully golden tone and faultless musicianship.

Included in this remarkable set are:

Bach's Violin Concerto in E Major BWV 1042 – rec. in May 1965 with the Collegium Winterthur (Szeryng directing from the violin).

Bach's Violin Concerto in A minor BWV 1041 – rec. in May 1965 with the Collegium Winterthur (Szeryng directing from the violin).

Bach's Concerto for Two Violins in D minor BWV 1043 – rec. in May 1965 with the Collegium Winterthur, and Peter Rybar 2nd Violin (Szeryng directing from the violin).

Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 61 – rec. 8-10 July 1965 with Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. In the first movement, Szeryng plays Joachim's cadenza, while in the third he plays that of Carl Flesch.

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor Op. 64 – rec. 3-5 July 1964 with Antal Dorati conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.

Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major K. 219 'Turkish' – rec. in January 1970 with Sir Alexander Gibson conducting the New Philharmonia Orchestra.

Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 6 in D Major K. 271a – rec. in April 1966 with Sir Alexander Gibson conducting the New Philharmonia Orchestra.

Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor Op. 63 – rec. in July 1965 with Gennady Rohzdestvensky conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.

Schumann's Concerto for Violin in D minor – rec. in July 1964 with Antal Dorati conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.

Sibelius' Violin Concerto in D minor Op. 47 – rec. 22-24 July 1965 with Gennady Rohzdestvensky conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.

Philips’ Spanish pressings were every bit as fine as their English, American, and German counterparts, and this Spanish issue is arguably even more rare than the Continental ones.
