Szell: Haydn Symphonies Nos. 88 & 104 - CBS/Telarc CLM 82 (sealed)
Jacket NM / LP MINT (sealed)
Note: The shrinkwrap is a bit torn in places, but this is a truly still-sealed, unplayed copy.
This very handsome and rather elusive LP remains among the more interesting entries in the George Szell/Cleveland Orchestra discography – a special limited edition recording issued by the Chessie System Railroads (and pressed by Telarc Records) in 1982 in honor of Haydn's 250th Birthday. In fact, Telarc founders Robert Woods and Jack Renner supervised the re-mastering of these 1954 mono recordings first issued on Epic Records (LC 3196).
For this issue two of Szell's finest Haydn recordings were chosen: the Symphony No. 88 in G Major 'Paris' and No. 104 in D Major 'London' – both Szell and the Clevelanders at their most captivating, performances that are both grand, spirited, and smiling. And they have never sounded better than in this superb Telarc pressing – for any admirer of Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra, this little-known LP will prove a beautiful addition to your collection.
Incidentally, this issue carries the original liner notes written for the Epic release written by Klaus G. Roy. The striking cover art was designed by Rick Holeman.
