As Stravinsky once observed, the Cleveland Orchestra under Szell played in the exact center of every note, yet that precision was achieved without loss of color or drama, and these powerful, trenchant, technicolor performances suggest that at that time, the Clevelanders constituted the finest orchestra in the land.

The Bartok was taped in the fabled acoustics of Severance Hall on 15 and 16 June 1965, while the Janacek was set down, at the same venue, on 15 October 1965. Both recordings remain landmarks in the respective discographies of these works. The sound – from the ‘Golden Age of Stereo’ – is breathtaking in its impact and amplitude, the entire production a true tour de force – truly phenomenal.

There are truly insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by the extraordinary musicologist Nicolas Slonimsky, provided in English only. The beautiful cover art reproduces a detail from Paul Klee’s “Rich Harbor”. This album was produced by Paul Myers.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is minor bumping at corners, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall a truly fine collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and it plays without defect – overall, a superb collector's copy.
