Stern: Prokofiev Violin Concertos 1 & 2 - Philips Réalités C. 8, superb copy
Jacket EX / LP NM
This handsome limited-edition gatefold LP from Philips (C. 8 “Réalités”, French pressing, pink/white label, mono, heavy gatefold jacket) features Isaac Stern’s high-octane accounts of Prokofiev's two Violin Concertos.
The exact contents and discographic information are as follows:
Prokofiev: Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major Op. 19
> with Dimitri Mitropoulos conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra
(rec. 3 March 1958 at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York City)
Prokofiev: Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor Op. 63
> with Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra
(rec. 22 January 1957 at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York City)
Incidentally, the remarkable cover art reproduces a tapestry (“Feuillage Solaire”) by Jean Picard le Doux, from Atelier Berlhant d’Aubusson.
Those unfamiliar with Philips Realites series would do well to investigate them j- they consist of a very heavy laminated cardboard gatefold jacket with very extensive liner notes and numerous archival photos – in this case of Prokofiev (on the podium, no less), Mitropoulos, and of Stern and Bernstein during the actual recording sessions.
