Starker: Saint-Saëns Concerto No. 1 + Rococo Vars. - French Mercury 121.025 MSL
Jacket NM / LP NM
This lovely LP – a superb collector's copy – from French Mercury (121.025 MSL, French pressing, blue/white label, mono, laminated flipback jacket) features Janos Starker’s magnificent accounts of Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor Op. 33 and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra Op. 33, both recorded with conductor Antal Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra at Watford Town Hall, London, on 26/27 June 1964 (producer: Harold Lawrence / engineer: Robert Eberenz).
In both works Starker plays with his trademark pinpoint accuracy, but there is no want of delicacy or fantasy and this must be counted among his most successful studio forays – truly exalted music-making by any measure and captured in superlative sound.
There are excellent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Henry-Jacques, printed in French only. The striking cover photo/design was executed by Sousse Ohana.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is minor corner wear bumping at corners, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a superb collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
