Reiner: Haydn Symphonies Nos. 95 & 101 - German RCA LSC-2742
Jacket VG- / LP VG+ (German pressing - red/silver label - stereo)
This handsome LP from German (LSC-2472, German Teldec · Telefunken-Decca pressing red/silver label, stereo) features Fritz Reiner’s valedictory recordings, made with ‘His’ Symphony Orchestra in New York only two months before his death, of Haydn’s Symphonies No. 95 in C Minor and No. 101 ‘Clock’ in D. In their times, both Szell and Bernstein were variously described as the finest Haydn conductors in North America, but in this listener’s opinion, Reiner trumps them both and it is unfortunate that this remarkable Hungarian conductor did not live to record more Haydn.
The reverse side of the jacket carries an eloquent tribute to Reiner by producer Richard Mohr, provided in English only. The memorable cover portrait of the conductor was executed by Herschel Levitt.
