Angelicum (LP)

Jacket EX / LP NM / Italian pressing

This beautiful and rare LP from Angelicum (LPA 5980, Italian pressing, green/silver label, stereo, glossy laminated jacket) features the undersung Michael Ponti in a dazzling 20th Century music program, brought off with tremendous verve, panache, and quicksilver poetry.

Ponti’s exact program is as follows:

Sergei Prokofiev:

Toccata in D minor Op. 11

Piano Sonata No. 3 in A minor Op. 28

Suggestione diabolique, No. 4 from Four Pieces for Piano Op. 4

Igor Stravinsky:

            Three Movements from Petrouchka

Bela Bartok:

            Two Romanian Dances

An extraordinary artist in both esoteric and mainstream repertoire, Ponti never enjoyed the universal acclaim he so richly deserved. This is exalted playing by any measure, a real find for the intrepid pianophile, and in a lovely pressing as well.

There are superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Angiola Maria Bonisconti, printed in Italian and English. The striking cover art is uncredited, alas.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor wear at corners, as well as some discoloration/ringwear to the rear panel, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
