Palenicek: Brahms Piano Sonata No. 3 Op. 5 + Intermezzi Op. 117 - Supraphon SV 8388
Jakcet VG / LP EX / Czech pressing
This excellent LP from Supraphon (SV 8388, Czech pressing, red/silver label, stereo) features the splendid Josef Palenicek's masterly account of Brahms's Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor Op. 5 and the Three Intermezzi Op. 117, first issued on LP in 1966. After Firkusny and Moravec, Palenicek is arguably the finest Czech pianist on record. This is powerful, richly burnished Brahms in the manner of Arrau, yet with great inner clarity. It certainly can be spoken of in the same breath as those by Curzon, Lupu, Rubinstein, Solomon, and more recently, Laplante. If you've not heard Josef Palenicek, there is no better place to start.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is slight bumping/wear at corners, as well as general edgewear and some creasing, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid and presentation worthy – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. The surfaces are not always CD silent, but in general the playback is superb – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
