Ormandy: Transcriptions of J.S. & J.C. Bach - Columbia ML 5580 (sealed)

$15.00 USD

Columbia Masterworks (LP)

Jacket NM / LP MINT (sealed)

This handsome LP – remarkably, a still-sealed copy – from LP from Columbia Masterworks (ML 5580, US pressing, label iteration unknown – presumably 6eye label, mono) features conductor Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in a resplendent collection of works by J.S. and J.C. Bach transcribed for full orchestra, as richly imaginative – and brought off with equal aplomb – as anything done by Stokowski.

The exact contents are as follows, all works originally composed by J.S. Bach:

J.S. Bach: Toccata & Fugue in D minor BWV 565 (arr. Eugene Ormandy)

(rec. at the Broadwood Hotel, Philadelphia, on 31 January 1961)

J.S. Bach: Toccata, Adagio & Fugue in C Major BWV 564 (arr. Eugene Ormandy)

(rec. at the Broadwood Hotel, Philadelphia, on 31 January 1961)

J.S. Bach: Passacaglia & Fugue in C minor BWV 582 (arr. Eugene Ormandy)

(rec. at the Broadwood Hotel, Philadelphia, on 10 April 1960)

J.C. Bach: Sinfonia for Double Orchestra Op. 18 No. 1 (arr. Eugene Ormandy)

(rec. at the Broadwood Hotel, Philadelphia, on 17 March 1957)

These recordings were produced by Thomas Frost and Howard H. Scott. There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by David Johnson, printed in English only. The memorable cover photo of Ormandy is credited to Penn.
