Ormandy/Philadelphia Orchestra: 1970 European Tour Album - German CBS 0654566 S
Jacket NM / LP NM / German pressing
This outstanding and little known LP from German CBS · Hoechst (0654566 S, German pressing, stereo, glossy laminated jacket) was specially issued in 1970 to mark the Philadelphia Orchestra’s European tour that year under Music Director Eugene Ormandy. Drawing upon several of the Fantastic Philadelphians recent recordings, CBS pressed this unique orchestra showpiece album as a unique promotional item, boasting no less than four memorable performances.
The exact contents are as follows:
Richard Strauss: Don Juan Op. 20 (17:00)
(rec. at Broadwood Hotel, Philadelphia on 31 January 1960)
Samuel Barber: Adagio for Strings Op. 11 (7:40)
(rec. at Broadwood Hotel, Philadelphia on 14 April 1957)
Maurice Ravel: Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2 (15:48)
(rec. at Broadwood Hotel, Philadelphia on 12 April 1959)
Air in G, from the Orchestra Suite No. 3 in D Major BWV 1068 (5:40)
(rec. at Broadwood Hotel, Philadelphia on 30 April 1959)
This is stunning orchestral playing, and conducting, by any measure and these performances can withstand the most exalted comparisions. Moreoever, the sound is absolutely superb.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the gatefold jacket is near-MINT. There is very minor bumping at corners, as well as some minute instances of discoloration discoloration, but that is all. However, there are no bends, seamsplits, or owners' markings, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and extremely attractive in appearance – overall, a lovely collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and plays without defect – a fine collector's copy.
