On offer here is David Oistrakh's famous "Encores" album. The great Russian violinist recorded all 8 selections in a single day’s session on 28 February 1956 with his long-time recital partner, the brilliant Vladimir Yampolsky. Included are:

Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune (from Suite Bergamasque – arr. Roelens)

Manuel de Falla’s Jota (No. 4 from 7 Canciones Populares Españolas – arr. Kochanski)

Eugene Ysaÿe’s Extase Op. 21

Peter Il'ych Tchaikovsky’s Valse Scherzo Op. 34 (arr. Bezekirsky)

Josef Suk’s Love Song Op. 7 No. 1 (arr. Kocian)

Zoltan Kodàly’s Three Hungarian Folk Dances (arr. Feigin)

Henryk Wieiawski’s Legénde Op. 17

Alexander Zarzycki’s Mazurka for Violin and Piano in G Major Op. 26

The tone is unmistakable, as is the generous personality, charm, and fantasy of the artistry.  Every miniature sounds from under Oistrakh’s bow as a minor masterpiece, each as captivating as the last.   Those who eschew such encore fare would be hard pressed to resist the sheer magic of Oistrakh’s playing here, perfectly encapsulated in these chips from the master’s workbench, and the perfect tonic to the more ‘serious’ fare usually on offer from this most probing of violinists.
