Mitropoulos: Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique - Columbia Masterworks ML 5188
Jacket EX / LP EX / US pressing
This excellent LP from Columbia Masterworks (ML 5188, US pressing, gray 6-eye label, mono) features Dimitri Mitropoulos and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra's thrilling account of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique Op. 14, recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York, on 24 February 1957.
Mitropoulos has the full measure of this phantasmagoric score and draws playing of both bite and fantasy from his New York players – a memorable performance from first to last.
Incidentally, the cover photo was taken by Claude Beaumont. There are excellent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Charles Burr, printed in English only.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight bumping/wear at corners and faint shelfwear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains perfectly solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a truly collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring flawless or NM surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
