$7.00 USD

His Master's Voice (LP)

Jacket VG- / LP VG+ / UK pressing

This handsome LP from His Master’s Voice (ALP 1571, English EMI pressing, red/gold label, mono, laminated flipback jacket) features Yehudi Menuhin in a triptych of brilliant recordings, all made with conductor Sir Eugene Goossens and the Philharmonia Orchestra in the fabled acoustics of London’s Kingsway Hall in September 1956.

Lalo: Symphonie Espagnole, Op. 21

First Movement: Allegro Non Troppo

Second Movement: Scherzando (Allegro Molto)

Third Movement: Intermezzo (Allegro Non Troppo)

Fourth Movement: Andante

Fifth Movement: Rondo (Allegro)

Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso Op. 28

Havanaise, Op. 83

Menuhin plays with great swagger and panache, as well as quicksilver delicacy when called for and Goossens accompaniments are perfectly shaded. Needless to say, the sound is first rate.

Incidentally, the lovely cover photo is credited to Zwirn. There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Antony Roper, printed in English only.

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD-. There is edgewear, more so at corners, a small scuff to the front panel and some chips along the open edge. However, there are no bends, seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP is VERY GOOD+. Though there is light surface noise throughout, in general the playback remains quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
