Melos Ensemble: Ravel Intro & Allegro + Ropartz, Roussel, Debussy - l'Oiseau-Lyre SOL 60048
Jacket VG / LP NM / LP pressed in Holland - jacket printed in the UK
This outstanding LP from L'Oiseau-Lyre (SOL 60048, Dutch pressing, green/silver label, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features the remarkable Melos Ensemble of London in a clutch of amazing chamber music performances featuring works by Ravel, Debussy, Roussel, and Ropartz.
Ravel's Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet, and String Quartet
Debussy: Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp
Roussel's Serenade for Flute, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Harp
Ropartz's Prelude, Marine et Chansons for Flute, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Harp
Harpist Osian Ellis is the common denominator to these delightful renditions. Wrote the esteemed James Methuen-Campbell in the January 1989 issue of The Grammophone: "The Ravel and the Debussy Sonata for flute, viola and harp, though recorded some 15 years earlier, have come up with a pristine freshness here. There is not a musician in the country with a more natural fluency than Osian Ellis, and together with the delicately sensitive contributions of the other players, the performances make for some compelling listening."
First released in 1962, these splendid performances can withstand the most exalted comparisons and the sound quality is superb – a wonderful disc from every standpoint.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is bumping at corners, discoloration, slight creasing, and some minor writing (work timings) on the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings and the whole remains solid and presentation worthy – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
