Konwitschny: Beethoven Overtures Leonore Nos. 1-3, Fidelio, Coriolan, etc. - Eterna 820 488
Jacket VG- / LP EX / German pressing
This handsome LP from Eterna (820 488, West German pressing, blue/white label, mono) features Franz Konwitschny and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra’s magnificent survey of Beethoven Overtures, all superbly recorded at the Bethanienkirche, Leipzig in August 1961.
Included are the following works of Beethoven:
Overture to the Creatures of Prometheus Op. 43
Leonore Overture No. 1
Leonore Overture No. 2
Leonore Overture No. 3 Op. 72a
Overture to Fidelio Op. 72
Coriolan Overture Op. 62
These are large-scaled, yet vital performances, with the Leipzig players producing a rich and warmly burnished sonority, revealing the towering stature of both conductor and orchestra.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD-. There is bumping at corners, edgewear, some ringwear, discoloration, and a small bit of writing to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and quite handsome in appearance – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is similarly EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not CD silent, in general the playback is superb. Those needing a MINT or near-MINT copy are advised to look elsewhere. This is an excellent collector's copy.
