Katchen: Beethoven Piano Sonatas No. 23 "Appassionata" & No. 32 - London LL 1233
Jacket VG+ / LP EX
This beautiful LP from London (LL 1233, LP pressed in England, jacket printed in the USA, red/gold label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features the young Julius Katchen in stirring accounts of Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas No. 23 in F minor Op. 57 “Appassionata” and No. 32 in C minor Op. 111, both vividly recorded at Decca’s West Hampstead Studios, London, during 15-16 March 1955 (producer: D.M. Walker).
Had it not been for his tragically early death, Katchen might have gone on to record an entire Beethoven Sonata cycle. Certainly his recordings of the composer’s 5 Piano Concertos have stood the test of time and based on his performances of these two minor key masterpieces there can be little doubt that such a traversal of the 32 would have been highly compelling.
The reverse side of the jacket carries informative liner notes by Dyneley Hussy, printed in English only. The cover photo of Katchen, and possibly the album design as well, was executed by A. Vanover.
