$20.00 USD

Chandos (LP)

Jacket NM / LP NM

This handsome LP from Chandos (ABRD 1245, German pressing, DMM - Direct Metal Mastering, blue/black label, DDD stereo) features one of the finest installments in Mariss Jansons and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra's brilliant Tchaikovsky series, this volume containing a magnificent account of the composer’s “Manfred” Symphony in Four Scenes Op. 58, sumptuously recorded at Oslo Philharmonic Concert Hall in November and December 1986 (producer: James Burnett Ralph Couzens / engineer: Dag Kristoffersen).

The exact track listing is as follows:

Manfred Symphony Op. 58 (in Four Scenes)

I: Lento lugubre - Moderato con moto

II: Vivace con spirito

III: Andante con moto

IV: Allegro con fuoco

Of Jansons' complete Tchaikovsky cycle, the eminent critic Edward Greenfield wrote in his review for the January 1989 issue of The Gramophone:

"Mariss Jansons's outstanding Tchaikovsky series with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra makes a welcome appearance in this boxed set, confirming all I have said about the individual issues over the last three years, It may still seem odd to those who have not sampled these consistently refreshing, beautifully paced and structured performances that the Oslo Philharmonic can so successfully match itself against the world's greatest orchestras, but the evidence here seems clearer to me every time I hear them and make comparisons.

"Jansons in Tchaikovsky has the gift of conveying the full power and poetry of these works, naturally without indulging in wilful distortions or exaggerations. The whole set provides a bench-mark in this area, not only for interpretation but for brilliant and atmospheric recording quality too, against which others now have to be judged."

And wrote the authors of the ubiquitous Penguin Guide to Compact Discs:

Janson’s Tchaikovsky series, which includes Manfred, is self-recommending. The full romantic power of the music is consistently conveyed and, above all, the music-making is urgently spontaneous throughout, with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra always committed and fresh, helped by the richly atmospheric Chandos sound.”

Incidentally, the striking cover art reproduces a detail from John Martin’s “Manfred on the Jungfrau”, reproduced by courtesy of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. There are excellent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Noel Goodwin, printed in English only. However, also included is a full-size insert with Goodwin’s notes in German and French.
