I Musici: Works by Vivaldi, Barber, Mozart, Albinoni - Philips 641.903 DSL

$9.00 USD

Philips (LP)

Jacket VG- / Vinyl NM / French pressing

This handsome LP – in wonderful sound – from Philips (641.903 DSL, French pressing, blue/silver label, mono) features one of the finest issues in the label’s regrettably short-lived “Magie du Son” series, which boasted truly superb sonics, this installment devoted to the crack Italian ensemble I Musici in a mixed program showcasing all facets of their artistry.

The exact contents are as follows:

Albinoni (arr. R. Giazotto): Adagio for Organ and Strings in G minor

            > with Maria Teresa Garatti, organ

(rec. at the Aula la magna, Rome, in October 1960)

Mozart: Adagio & Fugue in C minor K. 546

Barber: Adagio for Strings Op. 11

(rec. at the Bachzaal, Amsterdam, in June 1961)

Vivaldi: Concerto for Two Mandolins and String Orchestra in G minor RV 532

            > with Gino del Vescovo and Tommaso Ruta, mandolins

(rec. at the Salle de la Villa, Rome, in April 1960)

Vivaldi: Concerto for Two Flutes and String Orchestra in C Major RV 533

            > with Severino Gazzelloni and Giovanni Gatti, flutes

(rec. at the Salle de la Villa, Rome, in April 1960)

Incidentally, the lovely cover photo of St. Georges, Venice is uncredited. There are insightful liner notes on the rear side of the jacket by Henry-Jacques, as well as a listing of other titles in this series – all texts printed in French only.

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD-. There is a small chip to the spine, as well as minor wear at corners and discoloration, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
