III. Adagio molto e cantabile (beginning)

III. Adagio molto e cantabile (conclusion)

  1. Allegro assai vivace

Vox is too often regarded as a budget label, one offering thrift-edition performances to a wide audience, rather than “A” List recordings to the cognoscenti. However, their catalog boasted any number of remarkable artists, Horenstein chief among them. His Beethoven Ninth is possessed of a thrilling power and lyricism, a performance of enormous stature.

For this deluxe issue, Pathe / Vox pulled out all the stops, the heavy LP housed in a lavish cloth box with velvet liner and a lovely 10-page booklet (printed on art paper) with insightful liner notes by Jean Roy (in French only), as well as the complete text to Schiller’s Ode (provided in the original German and in French translation).

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the box is EXCELLENT. There is minor wear / aging at corners, but that is all. There are no corner breaks, seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the booklet is EXCELLENT. There is a minor crush to the lower-right corner, but that is all – a fine copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and playback is superb, close to NM. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
