Henkemans: Mozart Piano Concertos Nos. 11 & 14 - Philips A 00305 L ("Jubilee" Ed.)
Jacket VG / LP EX
Minor laminate lift, corner wear and discoloration; else fine.
This beautiful LP from Philips (A 00305 L, Dutch pressing, maroon/silver label, Minigroove, mono) features the very much underrated composer and pianist Hans Henkemans in magnificent performances of Mozart's Piano Concertos No. 14 in E-flat Major K. 449 and No. 6 in B-flat Major K. 238, both recorded in the Brahmssaal of the Musikverein, Vienna in May 1955 with conductor Bernhard Paumgartner and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
Henkemans brought not only a composer's insight to whatever he played, but also a consumate technical mastery. Indeed, his playing feels completely organic with a tremendous sense of overall architecture and drama, yet full of felicitous detail and graded expression. Although he is a bit cooler than some of his rivals, this is Mozart playing that can be spoken of in the same breath as Schnabel, Kempff, Serkin, Solomon, Uchida, et al.
There are informative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The striking cover design is similarly uncredited.
