Haskil: Mozart Piano Concertos K. 466 & K. 488 - French Philips A 00.315 L
Jacket GOOD / Vinyl EX (French pressing - red/silver Minigroove label)
This gramophone classic and beautiful LP from Philips ("Mozart Jubilee Edition" A 00.315 L, French pressing, red/silver "Minigroove" label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features that wonderful pianist Clara Haskil in sparkling and radiant accounts of Mozart's Piano Concertos No. 20 in D minor K. 466 and No. 23 in A Major K. 488,
Both were recorded in the warm acoustics of the Musikverein, Vienna in October 1954 with one orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, but two different conductors: in K. 466 Bernard Paumgartner led the VSO while in K. 488 it was Paul Sacher on the podium.
These recordings can withstand the most exalted comparisons, be it with Schnabel, Annie (or Edwin) Fischer, Robert Casadesus, Murray Periaha, Mitsuko Uchida, et al. If this were all that Haskil left us we would still be forever in her debt. Happily, the engineering is superb.
The insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket are by Henry Jacques printed in French only. The striking cover art was executed by Bourgeas.
