Haitink: Romantic Works (Berlioz, Schubert, Verdi, et al. - Philips D 88298 Y
Jacket VG+ / LP NM / Dutch pressing
This handsome gatefold LP from Philips (D 88298 Y, Dutch pressing, red/silver label, stereo) entitled “Bernard Haitink Conducts Romantic Orchestral Works” is also something of a tribute to the conductor and the Concertgebouw, carrying as it does homages to both in the liner notes, as well as a brief catalog section, with full-color reproductions of other Philips titles.
The exact contents are as follows, all works with Bernard Haitink leading the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and all performances recorded in the Grote Zaal, Concertgebouw, Amsterdam:
Franz Schubert: Ballet Music No. 2 from Rosamunde D. 797
(rec. on 31 May 1965)
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy: Scherzo, Notturno, and Wedding Music from A Midsummer Night’s Dream Op. 61
(rec. on 21 December 1964)
Hector Berlioz: Overture to Benvenuto Cellini Op. 23
(rec. on 23 September 1968)
Giuseppe Verdi: Overture to La Forza del Destino
(rec. on 1 December 1964)
Mikhail Glinka: Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla
(rec. on 24 December 1965)
The liner notes – including an interview with Haitink – are credited to C.B. Rubinstein and are provided in German only. The striking cover photo of Haitink is uncredited.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is minor wear at corners, as well as a bit of creasing and shelfwear. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects and the jacket remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
