Grumiaux: Für meine Fruende (For my Friends) - Violin Encores: Philips 6599 372

$175.00 USD

Philips (LP)

Jacket EX / LP NM

This lovely LP from Philips (6599 372, Dutch pressing, blue/silver label, stereo) entitled “Für meine Fruende” (“For my Friends”) features the great Belgian violinist Arthur Grumiaux in a captivating encores album, recorded with his longtime recital partner, pianist Istvan Hajdu.

While Heifetz, Milstein, Szeryng, Stern, et al. made a number of encore albums, Grumiaux’s discography boasts relatively few, a strange omission, but somewhat remedied here.

Grumiaux plays with unfailing imagination and grace and one sense a powerful re-creative personality behind the bow, each bon-bon brought off with tremendous elan and charm.

The exact contents, recorded in Amsterdam in February 1973, are as follows:

Side 1

Maria Theresia von Paradis (arr. Samuel Dushkin): Sicilienne

W.A. Mozart (arr. Fritz Kreisler): Rondo

Christoph Willibaud von Glück (Arr. Fritz Kreisler): Melodie, from Orpheo ed Euridice

Enrique Granados (arr. Fritz Kreisler): Danza española No. 5

Fritz Kreisler Schön Rosmarin

Fritz Kreisler: Liebeslied

Fritz Kreisler: Liebesfreud

Side 2

Francesco Maria Veracini: Allegro

Antonio Vivaldi: Siciliano Op. 3 No. 11

Jean-Marie Leclair: “Tambourin”, 4th Movement from the Sonata for Violin, Flute, and Basso Continuo Op. 9 No. 3

Ludwig van Beethoven: Minuet in G Major

Franz Schubert (arr. August Wilhelmj): “Ave Maria”, from Ellens Gesang III (Op. 52 No. 6)

Antonin Dvorak: Humoresque in G Major Op. 101 No. 7

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Valse sentimentale Op. 51 No. 6

Incidentally, the lovely cover design was executed by Helmut Schiefer. There are superlative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in German only.
