Gendron: Bach 6 Cello Suites BWV 1007-1012: Spanish Philips 67 68 123 (3LP box)
Box NM / LPs NM
This handsome 3-LP box set from Philips (67 68 123, Spanish pressing, red/silver labels, stereo) features the great Maurice Gendron in Bach's Six Suites for Solo Cello BWV 1007-1011, warmly recorded in the fine acoustics of the Scola Cantorum, Paris, in February 1964.
Gendron brings a searching musicianship, technical mastery, and beautiful tone to these masterpieces which, under his bow, are imbued with wonderful vitality and rarified beauty.
Included then are the following works of J.S. Bach:
Suite for Solo Cello No. 1 in G Major BWV 1007
Suite for Solo Cello No. 2 in D minor BWV 1008
Suite for Solo Cello No. 3 in C Major BWV 1009
Suite for Solo Cello No. 4 in E-flat Major BWV 1010
Suite for Solo Cello No. 5 in C minor BWV 1011
Suite for Solo Cello No. 6 in D Major BWV 1012
Included is a full-size 4-page booklet with extensive notes on the music (uncredited) – all texts are provided in Spanish only. The striking cover design for the box front is similarly uncredited.
Incidentally, composer Ned Rorem once said of Maurice Gendron: "He was the most gifted, the most difficult, the most spiritual human being I ever met."
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is near-MINT. There are two tiny scuffs to the rear panel, but that is all. There are no corner breaks, seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains extremely solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a beautiful collector's copy.
The condition of the handsome 4-page booklet is EXCELLENT. There is one minor crease, but that is all – otherwise, superb.
The condition of the 3 LPs is near-MINT throughout and playback is superb in all 3 – overall, these rate as truly fine collector's copies.
