Furtwangler: "Ein Kurkonzert" - Die Volks Platte SMVP 8016
Jacket VG- / LP NM
German pressing - mono
This LP from Die Volks Platte offers a budget re-issue, arguably in finer sound, of the more collecticle La Voix de son Maitre album (FALP 617) by the legendary German maestro in the closest he ever came to a 'lollipops' collection, and a quite fine one it is, too. Not as attractive as the original, this fine and more modern German pressing provides smoother sound with no loss of atmosphere or impact.
All performances were made with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on superlative form. It should be noted that in 3 of the works heard here – those by Tchaikovsky, Weber, and Nicolai – these remain the only surviving recordings by Wilhelm Furtwangler
Produced by Walter Legge and engineered by Douglas Larter, Robert Becket* and Anthony Griffith**, all sessions save one (noted below) were held in the warm and spacious acoustics of the Musikvereinssaal, Vienna.
Included are the following works:
Mendelssohn: The Hebrides Overture Op. 26 ('Fingal's Cave) – rec. 15 February 1949
Tchaikovsky: Valse and Finale (Thème russe), from the Serenade for Strings in C Major Op. 48 – rec. 2 February 1950** in the Brahmssaal, Vienna
Weber: Overture to Oberon – rec 1 February 1950**
Nicolai: The Merry Wives of Windsor Overture – rec. 18 January 1951*
