Fredriksson: Ravel Miroirs, Ondine + Liszt Funérailles, etc. - Philips A 08207 L
Jacket EX / LP EX
This little-known and rare LP from Philips (A 08207 L, Swedish pressing*, plum/silver “Minigroove” label, mono) features the Swedish pianist Sigurd Fredriksson in a stunning recital pairing works by Maurice Ravel and Franz Liszt. This recording was apparently also an opportunity to showcase Swedish piano manufacturer Hoffmans Pianofabriks AB, Stockholm’s new “Akademi VII” piano, designed by Georg Bolin and Tom Gripe.
*There is no indication as to the country of pressing for this LP. All text on the label is in English, as is the text on the back of the jacket, though at the bottom is printed “SIB-TRYCK, FARSTA, SWEDEN”. I believe it is a genuine Swedish pressing, but I cannot guarantee this.
Fredriksson’s recital was taped at “Börssalen”, The Swedish Academy Society” during 26-29 August 1960 (a Europa Films Co. production; supervisor: Göte Wilhelmsson / engineer: Olof Swembel).
Fredriksson (1928-1996) was a pupil of Sven Brandel at the Music Academy in Stockholm and made his public debut in the Swedish capital on 1 December 1959. He made his London debut a few years later at the Wigmore Hall. To my knowledge this is his only commercial recording, a great pity, as he was clearly an extraordinary talent.
Fredriksson’s program is as follows:
Ondine, Movement I from Gaspard de la nuit
Les jeux d’eaux a la villa d’este
Incidentally, the cover photo of Fredriksson was taken by Tore Johnson. There are fine liner notes, in English only, on the reverse side of the jacket (the author is uncredited).
