Fournier/Oistrakh: Brahms "Double" Concerto - Columbia SMC 80900 (w/g)
Jacket VG+ / LP VG+
This rare and handsome LP from Columbia (SMC 80900, German pressing [equivalent to Columbia SAX 2264, white/gold label, stereo) features one of the glorious Brahms Double Concertos on record, pairing the great David Oistrakh with the aristocratic Pierre Fournier. Recorded 29 February - 3 March 1956 in the fabled acoustics of London's Kingsway Hall, this Walter Legge produced recording caught his Philharmonia Orchestra on resplendent form, with the under-rated Alceo Galliera on the podium.
This leonine, richly expressive account captured every artist involved at the very peak of his powers, surpassing even the formidable, but more febrile 1939 Heifetz/Feuermann/Ormandy account as well as the 1951 Milstein/Piatigorsky/Reiner rendition, both for RCA Victor.
There are fine liners notes printed on the reverse side by CDS, provided in both German and English. The lovely front cover art is uncredited.
