Ferencsik: Bartok Miraculous Mandarin + Lehel: Cantata Profana - DG SLPM 138 873
Jacket EX / LP NM
This beautiful LP – in a red stereo jacket – from Deutsche Grammophon (SLPM 138 873, German pressing, AH tulip label, stereo) features János Ferencsik's powerful account of Bartok's The Miraculous Mandarin (Pantomime Op. 19 / Sz 73), made with the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra and and Choir on 23 June 1962.
Filling out the disc is György Lehel's equally compelling account of Bartok's Cantata Profana · The Enchanted Stages Sz 94, set down with soloists Jósef Réti (tenor) and András Faragó (bass), and the Chor & Orchester des Ungarischen Rundfunks und Fernsehens. This remarkable performance was set down on 7 June 1963.
Both performances were originally recorded by Qualiton Budapest, but arguably receive more lavish presentation here, with DG's handsome artwork and superior pressing quality.
There are informative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket – provided in German, English, and French. The amazing cover art is uncredited, alas. The jacket carries a publication date of 1/64.
