Dorati/Stockholm PO: Sibelius Symphony No. 2 (r. 1967) - German RCA VICS 1318
Jacket VG / LP NM (German pressing - red/silver label)
This beautiful LP from German RCA Victrola (VICS 1318, German Teldec · Telefunken-Decca pressing, red/silver Victrola Living Stereo label, glossy laminated jacket) features Antal Dorati and the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in one of the truly great unsung accounts of Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major Op. 43, recorded in Sweden, during 16-20 October 1967.
Dorati was not readily associated with the music of Jean Sibelius, but he brings the same authority (and imagination) to this score that he brought to all that he conducted. This is a richly evocative reading, wholly inside Sibelius’ unique soundworld and the Stockholm players are on inspired form, galvanized by their charismatic guest conductor.
The recording director was Helmut Mühle of Swedish Radio. The producers were Hakan Elmquist and Frank Hedman.
There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by producer Frank Hedman, printed in Swedish, German, and English. The striking cover art was executed by Gunnar Erkner.
