This beautiful 2-LP set (individual LPs) from Mercury MRL 2508/9, English Nixa pressings, red/silver labels, mono, glossy laminated flipback jackets) features Antal Dorati and the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra’s glittering account of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Op. 71 (complete ballet), sumptuously recorded at Northrup Auditorium, Minneapolis, in December 1953. The first of Dorati’s three commercial recordings of this ballet, it many ways it remains the freshest, imbued with an enchanting and exhilirating sense of discovery.
The reverse sides of the jackets carry insightful liner notes (uncredited) – provided in English only. The amazing cover art gracing both jackets is similarly uncredited, alas.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the 2 individual jackets is VERY GOOD. Both have a bit of curling along the open edge, and MRL 2509 has a small tear there as well. However, both are free of bends, . seamsplits, owners' markings or other defects and remain solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, these are very good collector's copies.
The condition of the 2 LPs is EXCELLENT throughout. Though surfaces are not silent, really these are fine copies and playback is quite fine. However, if you must have flawless or near-mint copies, these please do not buy this set – overall, these are excellent collector's copies.
