Jacket: NM / Vinyl: NM / Spanish pressing
This beautiful LP from Philips (58 38 419, Spanish pressing, plum/silver label, stereo) features conductor Antal Dorati and the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s high-octane accounts of Bartok’s Miraculous Mandarin Sz. 73, presented in its entirety, and the same composer’s Divertimento for String Orchestra Sz. 113. Both performances were taped in demonstration quality sound the spacious acoustics of Watford Town Hall, London, on 8-9 July 1964.
With his compatriots Fritz Reiner and Georg Solti, Dorati was among the foremost exponents of Bartok’s music, which he conducted not only with great insight, but also with great flair. His readings always boast the frisson of “live” performance, the various orchestras Dorati led in the studio or in concert rising to the occasion with brilliant aplomb, fearless and shining.
There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Derek Jole, printed in Spanish only. The amazing cover art is uncredited.
