Dominique Merlet: Brahms Handel Variations Op. 24 + 4 Ballades Op. 10 - FY 077
Jacket EX / LP NM / French RCA pressing
This handsome and rather scarce LP from FY (FY 077, French pressing, black/silver label, stereo) features the splendid pianist Dominique Merlet in a magnificent all-Brahms recital, with Side A devoted to The Four Ballades Op. 10 and Side B to the Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel Op. 24. This is remarkable pianist by any measure, and Merlet’s Handel Variations can withstand the most exalted comparisons, be it with Solomon, Nat, Serkin, or more recently, Ax and Perahia. The Four Ballades are equally commanding, Merlet having the full measure of Brahms’s sound world, and he is extremely well recorded – superlative!
Incidentally, the superb liner notes (provided in French and English) are by the noted musicologist Harry Halbreich.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the gatefold jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor bumping at corners, as well as some mild discoloration, but that it sall. There are no bends, seamsplits, or owners' markings, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very attractive in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and plays without defect – a fine collector's copy.
