Cor de Groot: Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 2 - Philips S 06134 R (10")
Jacket EX / LP EX
This handsome 10" LP from Philips (S 06134 R, Dutch pressing, blue/silver Minigroove label, mono – no stereo edition exists, glossy laminated flipback jacket) features Cor de Groot's magnificent rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major Op. 19, recorded with conductor Willem van Otterloo and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in the warm acoustics of the Grosser Saal, Musikverein, Vienna, on 24 February 1956.
Cor de Groot was a splendid pianist and is an artist whose recorded legacy is richly deserving of systematic re-issue and renewed appreciation on disc. His Beethoven Concerto cycle remains a remarkable achievement, very much equal Serkin's contemporaneous survey for Columbia Masterworks.
There are insightful liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The striking collage of cover photos is similarly uncredited.
