Browning: Beethoven Diabelli Variations Op. 120 - RCA LM-2877, superb copy
Jacket NM / LP NM
This handsome LP – a superb collector’s copy – from RCA (LM-2877, US pressing, white dog label, mono, original inner sleeve and insert included, promo copy – stamp on rear of jacket) features pianist John Browning’s magnificent account of Beethoven’s 33 Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli Op. 120, recorded in 1965 and sounding splendid here. This performance can be spoken of in the same breath as those by Arrau, Kovacevich, Backhaus, et al.
This remarkable album was produced by Peter Delheim and engineered by Bernard Keville. The reverse side of the jacket contains a touching reminiscence of Browning’s years at Juilliard by his teacher there, Rosa Lhevinne. Also included is a full-size insert with erudite and eloquent notes on the music by Robert Offergeld, Music Editor of Hi-Fi/Stereo Review. The memorable cover photo of Browning is uncredited.
