Boulez/New Philh: Debussy La Mer, Nocturnes, etc. - CBS/Sony Japan 20AC 1514
Jacket EX / LP NM / Japanese pressing
This beautiful LP from CBS Japan (20AC 1514, Japanese CBS/Sony pressing, brown label, stereo, insert included, no Obi) features Pierre Boulez and the New Philharmonia Orchestra in a truly magical all-Debussy program, made at Barking Town Hall, London, on 12 December 1966. For this listener, Boulez’s La Mer is – with Giulini’s 1962 account – the greatest on record.
The exact contents are as follows, with movement timings shown in parenthesis:
De l'aube à midi sur la mer (8:50)
Jeux de vagues (7:18)
Dialogue du vent et de la mer (7:37)
Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (9:42)
I Nuages (7:00)
I Fêtes (6:33)
I Sirènes* (10:57)
*with the John Alldis Choir
Incidentally, the striking cover art reproduces, in different color panels, Katsushika Hokusai’s famous woodblock “The Great Wave off Kanagawa”. There are liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket (printed in Japanese only). This is true of the insert as well, which details other release by CBS/Sony Japan.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minuscule bumping at corners and the slightest wear to the lower edge, but that is all. Otherwise, the jacket appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is near-MINT and the playback is superb – overall, this is a very fine collector's copy.
