This handsome and extraordinarily rare 6CD set from EMI Références (CHS 7 63873 2 A, manufactured in Germany, ADD mono, timings given below, booklet included, no slipcase*) features violinist Willi Boskovsky and pianist Lili Kraus’s cycle of Mozart Violin Sonatas, set down at the Salle Adyar, Paris and the Musikvereinssaal, Vienna during the years 1954-57.

Boskovsky and Kraus’s Mozart cycle was not complete, but did include all of the composer’s early Violin Sonatas, which are seldom heard either on the concert platform or on record. Although the producer for the Vienna sessions is not given, that for the Paris sessions was the great André Charlin. The recordings were re-mastered by Charles Levin.

In many ways, these remarkable recordings, now some 60 years old, remain unsurpassed for their sparkling wit, vitality, and poetry, the two great soloists matching each other bar for bar in inspiration, the sound picture very well balanced. For all those who care about the art of the violin (or the piano!), this set will prove endlessly fascinating and rewarding.

The cover photos of Boskovsky and Kraus are credited to “X” and Fayer, respectively. The album design was executed by Sylvie Trambouze. Included is a 16-page booklet with erudite and eloquent notes by longtime Gramophone contributor Lionel Salter, provided in English, French, and German.

*Note: This set consists of 2 “double-wide” jewel cases holidng 3 CDs each. If there was a slipcase housing the 2 “double-wide” cases, it is no lost. But this hardly matters. All tray cards and the booklet is still present, and all are in excellent condition. Also, I have provided both photos of the back sides of the 2 jewel case sets, but only 1 of the front side. That is because the front side photos/designs are identical.
