Bernstein/Israel PO: Firebird & Pulcinella Suites - DG 415 127-1 (DDD)
Jacket VG- / LP NM
This handsome and rare LP from Deutsche Grammophon (415 127-1, manufactured in West Germany, DDD stereo, white circle label) features Leonard Bernstein and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra's brilliant accounts of Stravinsky's L'Oiseau de Feu (Suite 1919) and Pulcinella (Suite 1947), both recorded 'live' at Frederic R. Mann Auditorium, Tel Aviv on 18 May 1984. Though some have an expressed a preference for Bernstein's earlier NYPO accounts, for this listener his DG remakes benefit from the added frisson of 'live' performance, boasting numerous felicitious touches and with a great sense of occasion.
This Stravinsky LP – along with the conductor's DG Mahler albums – must be counted among Bernstein's last recordings to be issued in the long-play format. The sound is of demonstration quality, the artwork striking, the whole a superb memento of Bernstein.
