Ansermet/OSR: Debussy La Mer (rec. 1951) - Decca LW 5267 (10")
Jacket EX / LP EX
This beautiful 10" LP from Decca (LW 5267, UK pressing, black/silver ffrr label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features conductor Ernest Ansermet and l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in a richly evocative account of Debussy's La Mer, warmly recorded in the fabled acoustics of Victoria Hall, Geneva, in March 1951.
Note: Some have referred to this performance as Ansermet's 1957 La Mer, and others even his 1964 La Mer. However, the 1957 La Mer was recorded in October 1957 and I have found online reviews citing LW 5267 as early as January 1957. Thus, I believe with some certainty, that this is Ansermet's second of four La Mer's (1947, 1951, 1957, and 1964). Moreover, this would seem to be its only incarnation on LP, though it has been issued on CD in Japan.
This album was produced by Victor Olof and engineered by Arthur Haddy. There are insightful liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The memorable cover photo of Ansermet is similarly uncredited.
