Ansermet: Bartok Concerto for Orchestra Sz. 116 - Decca LXT 5305
Jacket EX / LP NM-
This beautiful LP from Decca (LXT 5305, UK pressing, orange/silver label, mono) features Ernest Ansermet and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande's thrilling and technicolor performance of Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra Sz. 116, recorded in the fabled acoustics of Victoria Hall, Geneva in 1959.
Note the striking artwork, which was always an added attraction of Ansermet/OSR issues.
Their Bartok Concerto for Orchestra boasts tremendous verve and imaginative insight, and this must be counted among Ansermet and the OSR's finest achievements on record, to make even the most jaded skeptic marvel at this masterly blend of subtlety and panache.
So many endless apologies are made for the supposed short-comings of the Suisse Romande Orchestra that a critical bias has nearly rendered their every Decca recording an also-ran. These ‘faults’ have been exaggerated, and how well they play against the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is less important than how well they play Bartok. And they play this music superbly, and for this listener at least, Ansermet’s Concerto for Orchestra is among the finest ever recorded, so rich in telling detail and atmosphere.
