Anda/Kubelik: Grieg Piano Concerto Op. 16 / Schumann Op. 54 - DG SLPM 138 888
Jacket VG / LP EX / LP pressed in Germany - jacket printed in Spain
This handsome LP – in a Red Stereo jacket – from Deutsche Grammophon (SLPM 138 888, LP pressed in Germany / jacket printed in Spain, tulip label, stereo) features Geza Anda’s fresh-as-paint accounts of Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor Op. 16 and Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor Op. 54, both made with conductor Rafael Kubelik and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in the warm acoustics of Jesus Christus-Kirche, Berlin, on 23/24 September 1963 (producer: Hans Weber / engineer: Günter Germanns).
Of DG’s CD re-issue of these performances in their Galleria series, The Gramophone wrote:
“Another record from the [mid-1960s] provides a familiar coupling of the Grieg and Schumann Piano Concertos. Géza Anda gives a strong, ardent and poetic performance of the Schumann; in the Grieg his tempos are a shade deliberate at times, but his playing is sensitive and beautifully phrased. The BPO under Kubelik provide sympathetic support and the recording sounds well.”
There are excellent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Willibald Götze, printed in Spanish only. The lovely front cover art is uncredited.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD-. There is a slight ripple to the laminate at the upper-right corner, laminate lift to the rear panel, and discoloration to the same. However, there are no seamsplits, owners marking, bends, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, still a good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not perfectly silent, really this is a fine copy and playback is superb, close to NM. If you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, rates as an excellent collector's copy.
