Achucarro: Falla Nights in the Gardens of Spain, etc. - Spanish RCA ECRL-3056
Jacket NM / LP NM
This beautiful LP from Spanish RCA (ECRL-3056, Spanish pressing, red RCA Victor label, stereo) features the remarkable pianist Joaquin Achucarro in magnificent performances of three concertante works by composer Manuel de Falla.
When Zubin Metha first accompanied Achucarro, he said he had not heard such a beautiful tone since Artur Rubinstein.
The exact discographic contents are as follows, all works by Manuel de Falla:
1) Night in the Gardens of Spain
> with Eduardo Mata conducting the London Symphony Orchestra
2) Concerto for Harpsichord, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Violin and Cello
3) Concerto for Harpsichord (vers. for Piano), Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Violin and Cello
> with Eduardo Mata conducting Members of the London Symphony Orchestra
Peter Lloyd, flute
Anthony Camden, oboe
Jack Brymer, clarinet
John Georgiadis, violin
Douglas Cummings, cello
All three works were recorded in the spacious acoustics of London’s Walthamstow Assembly Hall on 15/16 January 1977 (producer: Charles Gerhardt / engineer: Arthur Lilly).
This is exalted playing by any measure and Achucarro’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain can be spoken of in the same breath as those accounts by Alicia de Larrocha, Arthur Rubinstein, Clifford Curzon, Martha Argerich, et al.
There are superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by producer Charles Gerhardt, printed in Spanish only. The lovely cover photo is credited to Salmer.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the glossy laminated jacket is near-MINT. There is a slight bump to the upper-right corner and a small sticker to the lower left; otherwise, the album appears as new – overall, a truly lovely collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and the playback is superb – overall, a really superb collector’s copy.
