Accardo: Paganini Caprices Op. 24 Nos. 1-12 - Spanish RCA LM 16312 - stunning
Jacket NM / LP NM-
This beautiful LP from Spanish RCA (LM 16312, Spanish pressing, plum/silver label, mono) features Vol. 1 of Salvatore Accardo's first traversal of Paganini's 24 Caprices for Solo Violin Op. 1, devoted to the set's second half, Caprices Nos. 1-12. Although his more famous DG version may boast better sonics, Accardo's first recording – released in 1963 – is imbued with a tremendous sense of occasion, the almost palpable sense of discovery, and a jaw-dropping technical command that make it, even nearly a half century on, a landmark in the Paganini discography. This magnificent account of Op. 1 still awaits a proper CD transfer.
There are insightful liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in Spanish only. The striking cover design is similarly uncredited.
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the laminated flipback jacket is near-MINT. There is some tiny laminate lift near the spine, as well as some very minor corner wear, but that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, colorful, and highly attractive – overall, a lovely collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a very fine copy and the playback is superb. If you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a very fine collector's copy.
