This handsome and rare LP from Electrecord (ECE 0500, Romanian pressing, gray label, mono) features the extraordinary pianist Gheorghe Halmos in magnificent accounts of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas No. 17 in D minor Op. 31 No. 2 "Tempest" and No. 28 in A Major Op. 101, recorded in the early 1960s and sounding splendid here. 

Halmos made all too few recordings and his entire discography is very much worth seeking out. He plays with consummate technical command, penetrating musicianship, and golden tone.

This album was produced by Ing. Eugen Wendel and engineered by Ana Frost. There are extensive liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Radu Negreanu, printed in Romanian only. The striking cover design was executed by Melania Schmidt.
