Capitol (LP)

Jacket NM / LP NM (US pressing)

This beautiful LP – a superb collector’s copy – from Capitol (P 8299, US pressing, green/gold label, mono – no stereo edition exists, original inner sleeve included) entitled “percussion!” features three brilliant performances of works by Bela Bartok Cesar Chavez, and Darius Milhaud, each brought off with tremendous verve and imbued with a powerful atmosphere.

The exact contents are as follows:

Daurius Milhaud: Concerto for Percussion and Small Orchestra

> with Felix Slatkin conducting the Concert Arts Orchestra

Carlos Chavez: Toccata for Orchestra

> with Felix Slatkin conducting the Concert Arts Orchestra

Bela Bartok: Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta

with Harold Byrns conducting the Los Angeles Chamber Symphony Orchestra

There are informative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The wonderful cover art is similarly uncredited, alas. This album was first released in the USA circa 1955.

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is a small bit of wear to the upper-right corner and light discoloration along the edges, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a truly excellent collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
